Lake Chad

Lake Chad is one of the most beautiful lakes in Nigeria. Lake Chad is a large body of freshwater surrounded by dunes that span four nations: Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad. Regarding ecology, Lake Chad has been changing continuously. Its geology has experienced changes that are the focus of many debates. The area at this time is around 17,000 km2 (measured during its high point at the end of the rainy season). It is an endorheic lake that is primarily nourished by the waterways of Logone Chari and Komadougou.

This ecosystem is home to a wide range of wet zones, including open water, polders, and transient or permanent ponds, some of which are natron-rich. A complicated network of meanders, some of which are planted, connects the water and sand deserts in the area surrounding the lake. Wide floodplains on the lake's shores are revealed by receding waters during the dry season. They support several animal species, including migrating birds that utilize these plains as resting places, as well as aquatic plants like papyrus and spirulina.

A peculiar aspect of Lake Chad is the abundance of hundreds of islands and small islands, many of which are inhabited by different communities, including the Kotoko, Mouloui, Barma, Boulalan, Babalia, Kanembou, and Haoussa, who depend on the lake's resilience to sustain their ways of life and live off of its resources. This long-standing coexistence between man and the environment gives this enormous lake a true cultural landscape dimension.
