Amelia Island, Florida

Amelia Island, named after King George II's daughter, is a 20-minute drive from Jacksonville. Amelia Island boasts 13 miles of charming Atlantic shoreline, where you can watch the sunrise over crystal-sand beaches, then sunbathe and watch the waves at Peters Point Beachfront Park. Amelia Island State Park is a great place to fish. If you're traveling with the family, go horseback riding at sunset or spend time strolling the beach to find colorful seashells or great white shark teeth for your collection.

The tiny island is particularly famous for its two annual festivals, Amelia Island's Concours d'Elegance and Eight Flags Island's Shrimp Festival. The Amelia Island History Museum offers educational walking tours, including a Spooky Tour that will leave you shivering.

April, May, and June are the right time to travel here. Some people may prefer the colder months in the winter to golf.
