Amphenol Corporation is a significant manufacturer of electrical and fiber optic connectors, as well as cable and connection systems such as coaxial cables. Amphenol is a portmanteau of the corporation's original name, American Phenolic Corp.
Amphenol was created in Chicago in 1932 by entrepreneur Arthur J. Schmitt, whose initial invention was a tube socket for radio tubes (valve holder bases). Its global headquarters are in Wallingford, Connecticut.
