Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Netherlands takes pride in being eco-friendly. The preferred transportation method in the Netherlands is a bicycle, which is not surprising given the nation's flat and beautiful environment. Every Dutch local claims to own two bicycles, and the nation has 32,000 kilometers of cycling routes. In particular, during the summer, you'll see thousands of them on the streets of its city, Amsterdam.
While using public transportation is a cinch, if you rent a bike while traveling, you won't have to worry about trains or buses. However, if you're a pedestrian crossing the street, make sure to look both ways because many bikes ride straight through. As you pass the city's spectacular homes, slow down. Their canal-hugging magnificence traces back to the Golden Age. Take a boat ride across the waterways to pass by the fascinating bridges and get a new view of the townhouses. Don't miss the expansive Rijksmuseum, the stunning Van Gogh Museum, or the heartbreaking Anne Frank House while you're on land. The famous Tulip Festival begins in late March and runs through early May, so summer is too late to take in the breathtaking tulip displays, but there is still enough of beauty to be seen strolling along the canals, visiting the shops, and dining on a patio.
