Animals, Self, and Society
This course, "Animals, Self, and Society" from Coursera, investigates how animals and people fit into the "society" web of structures and connections. Module 1 investigates the practice of "thinking with animals", which examines some of the key symbolic roles that animals play in society. This course looks at how people construct various animal meanings and the consequences these meanings have for both animals and humans. Analyzing how animals are represented in the media will give you first-hand experience with this.
Modules 2 and 3 will look into human-animal relationships, both those that cause suffering and those that are beneficial. Although many people refer to their pets as friends or family members, Module 2 delves deeper into what friendship and family membership mean in the context of other species. Module 3 delves deeper into the dark side of these relationships, with a focus on animal abuse and its link to domestic violence. Module 4 focuses on people's interactions with animals outside of the home and on the farm. The treatment and moral status of animals commonly referred to as "wild" are shaped by how people perceive and understand them.
