The mobile network brand's name "Au" is based on two verbs, "to meet" (会う) and "to unite" (合う) (both pronounced Au). In addition, the letter Au is also an abbreviation of some English words, where "A" stands for access, always and amenity, and "U" stands for unique and universal and the user (user).
The predecessor of Au network is from two carriers DDI and IDO. IDO's network started in December 1988 in the Kanto and Tokai regions, which is owned by Toyota. The DDI network is operated by Kyocera Corporation and began to be serviced in 1989. Au was later established by Kyocera in November 2000 as part of the DDI Cellular network. In 2001, the company was merged into KDDI (founded in 2000 as a result of the merger of DDI, KDD and IDO), but the Au brand name remained unchanged and applied to all mobile phone services belongs to KDDI Group.
In terms of coverage density, Au is among the 3 carriers with the widest coverage in Japan, with the second and third highest transmission quality in the country.
