After releasing her debut album in 2002, Avril Lavigne immediately gained international notoriety. She first became well-known in her native Canada while still in her teens. As her reputation spread, a very intriguing conspiracy theory that claimed that the Avril Lavigne you know is not the Avril Lavigne you believe you know emerged. This rumor asserts that Lavigne actually passed away in 2003.

According to this conspiracy theory, Lavigne committed suicide because she was depressed following her parents' divorce in 2003. At the request of her record company, she was replaced by a doppelgänger who assumed responsibility for her singing, making CDs, and performing live. The conspiracy also suggests that the original Avril might still be alive and only staged her own demise, which would make things even more bizarre.
