Barra
Paola Ibarra and Yhadira Guzmán bring the brightness of their beloved Mexico City to Somerville’s Union Square with Barra. It has guacamole piled onto freshly fried chicharrón, its cactus salad, or its aguachile. Alongside a selection of top-notch tacos and seasonal tamales, diners can sip on flights of the finest mezcal, refreshing pints of michelada and margaritas rimmed with chapulines for a truly Mexican touch. García Osorio’s Barra bites are rooted in traditional Mexican fare with a focus on local ingredients and contemporary flavors. A taco de chile relleno sees a blue corn tortilla topped with beans, a stuffed pepper, and pickled vegetables. And for dessert, there is a tamal de calabaza en tacha, or a pumpkin tamale covered in syrup and accompanied by homemade ice cream.
Barra is not made for lengthy, sit-down dinners sprawled across spacious tables. The former juice bar can hold 24 people; the full kitchen is equipped to serve food on the menu. This eatery may be small on space, but it’s big on acid and is sure to leave patrons’ taste buds tingling.
