Paola Ibarra and Yhadira Guzmán bring the brightness of their beloved Mexico City to Somerville’s Union Square with Barra. It has guacamole piled onto freshly fried chicharrón, its cactus salad, or its aguachile. Alongside a selection of top-notch tacos and seasonal tamales, diners can sip on flights of the finest mezcal, refreshing pints of michelada and margaritas rimmed with chapulines for a truly Mexican touch. García Osorio’s Barra bites are rooted in traditional Mexican fare with a focus on local ingredients and contemporary flavors. A taco de chile relleno sees a blue corn tortilla topped with beans, a stuffed pepper, and pickled vegetables. La Victoria Taqueria, which boasts outposts in Belmont and Beverly, is celebrated amongst serious Mexican food enthusiasts for its use of top-notch ingredients and family recipes. The restaurant is one of several blink-and-you-miss-it storefronts across from the Regent Theatre, and somehow the people behind the place have managed to squeeze in a few tables along the left and right walls. Small as it is, however, La Victoria Taqueria's space is rather attractive, with warm, rustic, and old-looking wood paneling and a similarly attractive sign out front that is made of reclaimed wood as well.

Its claim to fame lies with its flavorful, juicy, slow-cooked meats, including traditional Mexican chorizo, al pastor and beef tongue that are then stuffed in tacos, tortas and burritos, and scattered atop platos of authentic rice and beans. While everything on the menu is a knock-out, the standout here is the surtido taco, a tortilla packed with every tasty part of the pig, even the fatty bits and skin. Tacos Lupita may not have the pizzaz of other places throughout the city, but it makes up for its lack of fanfare (and margaritas) with some of the most legit Mexican food around. Its simple, straightforward menu includes authentic burritos and tacos, which are filled with savory meats ranging from chicken and pork al pastor to chorizo and beef tongue. On the weekends, it even upholds the Mexican tradition of serving mondongo, a labor-intensive tripe soup that’s believed to be the ultimate hangover cure. With a bare-bones interior and counter service, it’s not exactly a lively sit-down establishment, so just plan on taking all of your delectable dishes to go.

El Pelón Taqueria has been a Fenway mainstay for years. The small, cheerful space gets jammed before Red Sox games - remember, you can bring food into Fenway, though your neighbors won't enjoy watching you devour a giant burrito during the game. Loyal customers tend to stick to the basics, from fried plantains to the house tacos, including a terrific, cornmeal-crusted fish varietal.

All of their food is phenomenal and they have reasonable prices for the portion. The Pescado burrito, crisp breaded cod is accompanied by the standard rice, black beans, lettuce, salsa, and spicy mayo, and guac, which is the perfect dish. The atmosphere of the place is really comfortable with a framed photo wall, fun decorations, and free El Pelon Taqueria postcards. There are maybe 2-3 tables inside with additional bar spots, as well as outdoor seating. The service was pretty fast and the food is nicely wrapped/packaged for take-out.

Taqueria Jalisco has a varied menu. Many are fans of the beef tongue filling, but the birria taco—only available on the weekends—is a perfectly rendered rendition: beef slow-cooked with adobo spices, then chopped fine and topped with cilantro and onion. The tamales at Jalisco are really good. They’re made in-house, with a healthy portion of masa surrounding moist chicken with salsa verde or tender pork with a spicier salsa roja. The tacos are simple meat, onion, and cilantro combos on corn tortillas, but the three tableside salsas (which all vary on the heat index) transform them into worthy tamale sidekicks. The Torta Mexicana with carnitas is a huge grilled sandwich with an ideal ratio of tender pork to bread. And on those winter nights when breathing results in a brain freeze, the huge bowls of soup - especially the pozole - are more effective than the LED fireplace you bought at Kmart’s closing sale.

The family-owned space could generously be described as compact. The restaurant is decorated with a romanticized painting of a farmer and his horse. The waiters and service are good.

Be prepared to wait in line, as Felipe’s Taqueria is almost always packed, and for good reason. This assembly-style Mexican eatery believes in the importance of authentic recipes and fresh ingredients. For being in an area with such expensive real estate, Felipe’s has a relatively large-sized dining area and outdoor space during the warmer months. The atmosphere at Felipe’s is warm, welcoming, and friendly, and it is one of the few late-night food destinations in the square.

At Felipe’s Taqueria, the philosophy for good food is simple: ingredients should always be fresh and the recipes authentic. The chef cooks all of the food from scratch continuously throughout the day. The menu of Tenoch is simple, sort of like Chipotle. It offers nice, simple basic Mexican food. The menu consists of Tortas, enchiladas and tacos, beans and rice. It also has the traditional Mexican pressed sandwich made with Telera (like a thick French roll). The sandwich’s meat or vegetarian base is generously topped with Oaxaca cheese, chipotle mayo, onions, avocado and tomatoes. Rest assured that the requisite tacos, quesadillas and burritos are all here too, along with Mexican sodas for the full authentic experience. The recent opening of a new branch in Davis Square (there’s also a Medford outlet and a food truck) caused heart palpitations among Somervillians happy to wait in half-hour lines for their dinner.

Lone Star Taco Bar attracts hordes of Allston students happy for $4 tacos and a plethora of under-$10 accompaniments such as grilled street corn being slathered in cotija cheese and chili-lime aioli, refried bean tostadas and huevos rancheros. The hand-made masa harina corn tortillas make a difference, as do the slow-cooked pork carnitas and mesquite-smoked beef barbacoa. There is a flat rate for most of Lone Star’s tacos. They’re bold (smoked brisket, spicy beef, beer-battered fish), deftly adorned (avocado crema, fresh mint, pickled red onion), and delivered to you lovingly cradled in house-made tortillas. It also has El Diablo, laced with smoky mezcal and rimmed with dried chili salt.

Potent tequila cocktails include the oddball-but-delicious Hombre sin Nombre (Blanco tequila, Peychaud’s bitters, mole bitters, agave, Chartreuse).
