Basilica di San Marino

The Basilica di San Marino will be the next name on the list of the best places to go in San Marino. This neo-classical basilica was built on the foundations of a fourth-century Romanesque church dedicated to San Marino (St. Marinus) that had been abandoned in the early nineteenth century.

The statues and paintings on the seven altars are worth seeing, and the high altar features a Tadolini-sculpted statue of St. Marinus. The relics of St. Marinus are kept in an urn near the high altar. The Basilica di San Marino's interior is divided into three naves by sixteen Corinthian columns that form a vast ambulatory around the semicircular apse. With a long nave and two side aisles lined with altars, the interior is in traditional basilica design. A statue of St. Marino by Adamo Tadolini, a disciple of Antonio Canova, graces the altar.
