Rocca Guaita

The first name on the list is Rocca Guaita (Guaita Fortress). The city of San Marino is nestled at the foot of three fortifications that cap the long slope of Mount Titano. Rocca Guaita, built in the 11th century, is the first and oldest of the strongholds. It was used as a prison for a period and was rebuilt multiple times for various purposes before taking on its current appearance during the 15th-century struggle between San Marino and the House of Malatesta.

Rocca Guaita, like the other two towers in San Marino, has a pentagonal foundation. It is the oldest and possibly the most well-known of the three towers, though they are all well-known around the world as a group. San Marino's populace used to assemble here to remain safe during sieges since the two walls are solid and powerful. The tower requires some climbing to reach, but the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from its lofty perch make it well worth the effort.

  • Location: Salita Alla Rocca, 61, 47890 Città di San Marino, San Marino
  • Time to visit Rocca Guaita: Rocca Guaita is open every day of the year. However, on December 25th, January 1st, and November 2nd in the afternoon, the tower is closed.
