  1. The first name on the list is Rocca Guaita (Guaita Fortress). The city of San Marino is nestled at the foot of three fortifications that cap the long slope of Mount Titano. Rocca Guaita, built in the 11th century, is the first and oldest of the strongholds. It was used as a prison for a period and was rebuilt multiple times for various purposes before taking on its current appearance during the 15th-century struggle between San Marino and the House of Malatesta.

Rocca Guaita, like the other two towers in San Marino, has a pentagonal foundation. It is the oldest and possibly the most well-known of the three towers, though they are all well-known around the world as a group. San Marino's populace used to assemble here to remain safe during sieges since the two walls are solid and powerful. The tower requires some climbing to reach, but the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape from its lofty perch make it well worth the effort.

    • Location: Salita Alla Rocca, 61, 47890 Città di San Marino, San Marino
    • Time to visit Rocca Guaita: Rocca Guaita is open every day of the year. However, on December 25th, January 1st, and November 2nd in the afternoon, the tower is closed.

  2. Mount Titano, at 739 meters, is the highest point for miles and offers amazing views from any of its three towers. On a clear day, the views span northwest to the Apennines, east to Rimini's coast, and across the Adriatic to Croatia's Dalmatian coast. Mount Titano's lengthy slope is punctuated by three castles, the highest of which is Rocca Cesta. The Passo delle Streghe, or Witches' Passage, connects them via a paved walkway.

The mountain summit is dotted with booths offering snacks, drinks, and souvenirs, giving it a carnival-like atmosphere. Rocca Cesta houses an antique armaments museum containing tens of thousands of weapons, including swords, knives, and crossbows, as well as early firearms and some strange experiments, such as a dagger-gun from 1730. The three towers, which appear on the San Marino flag and coat of arms, are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that also contains the ancient town.

  3. The late-nineteenth-century neo-Gothic Government House (Palazzo Pubblico), with its square crenelated tower, was designed by architect Francesco Azzurri and constructed of stone quarried from Mount Titano. Because of its Gothic architecture and ornate exterior, it is instantly recognizable in San Marino. Palazzo Pubblico is the state's formal Town Hall, where all major government issues and festivities take place. The exterior is adorned with the Republic's and its four municipalities' coats of arms, and an interior staircase leads to the Council Hall on the top floor.

As you continue, you will notice a square clock tower that rises above the building and has a parapet that looks like the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. A staircase inside the structure leads to the top tower, which is well worth a visit. There is a cost to enter the Palazzo Pubblico, which is open daily except on certain public holidays.

  4. The Basilica di San Marino will be the next name on the list of the best places to go in San Marino. This neo-classical basilica was built on the foundations of a fourth-century Romanesque church dedicated to San Marino (St. Marinus) that had been abandoned in the early nineteenth century.

The statues and paintings on the seven altars are worth seeing, and the high altar features a Tadolini-sculpted statue of St. Marinus. The relics of St. Marinus are kept in an urn near the high altar. The Basilica di San Marino's interior is divided into three naves by sixteen Corinthian columns that form a vast ambulatory around the semicircular apse. With a long nave and two side aisles lined with altars, the interior is in traditional basilica design. A statue of St. Marino by Adamo Tadolini, a disciple of Antonio Canova, graces the altar.

  8. Although it may seem strange to see a fully restored and equipped farmhouse museum in a tiny principality perched on a cliff's edge, San Marino is proud of the long agricultural history. Montecchio's House of Fabrica is one of the oldest patronal houses, dating back to at least the mid-1700s. Museum of Agricultural Culture and Traditions, which has been restored to its original state and is equipped to replicate the daily lives of farm families in the communities surrounding Mount Titano, aims to conserve some of the rural traditions and practices. This structure has been returned to the community as a result of extensive restoration and repairs that have always preserved the building's historic features.

With the joint efforts of the State Secretary for Territory, Environment, and Agriculture, the Town Castle Council, and the Committee of the Territory of San Marino, the farm-house has been recovered after many years of neglect, with the goal of opening it to the public. Domestic tools, copper pots, coal-heated flat-irons, a loom, cradle, and other vintage furniture are displayed alongside farm tools such as sickles and hoes in Museum of Agricultural Culture and Traditions.

    • Location: Strada di Montecchio 11, San Marino Città
    • Time to visit Museum of Agricultural Culture and Traditions: open on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:30 am to 12:00 am and on Wednesday, Friday from 8:30 am to 10:30 am
