Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum
The gardens at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum are among the best in the area, so if you're planning a garden wedding, you'll appreciate the many different gardens, the bamboo forest, and hundreds of different plants to admire. The venue also has a 45-room English-style manor house with bay views.
These amenities are spread out over 33 acres, giving you plenty of options for your wedding. The North Garden is where most wedding ceremonies take place. The Mansion and Wedding Tent will then be exclusively yours for the remainder of your wedding day. For a classy touch to your outdoor wedding day, the tent is nicely appointed with hard flooring and indoor lighting.
Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle bought the property in Bristol in 1894 because it allowed them to moor their new steam yacht, The Marjorie, which they had purchased from Nathanael Herreshoff, a renowned Rhode Island boat builder. The Van Wickles chose to live in an enclave along the shores of Narragansett Bay, from Westerly to Little Compton, rather than in nearby, more fashionable Newport.
The Van Wickles, and later the McKee family and Marjorie Lyon, built a rural retreat on Narragansett Bay that reflected their distinctive tastes and diverse interests. Rather than status or ostentation, the family valued informality, friendship, outdoor activities, and community service.
