Broadmoor Spa
When this luxury resort first opened in 1918, it boasted one of the country's first spas with separate areas for men and women. Guests were urged at the time to dress in their rooms and take the service elevator directly to The Broadmoor's "thermal hydrotherapeutic department" (aka spa). According to Krista Heinicke, public relations manager and resident historian, a half-hour massage costs a buck, while a Turkish bath and steam room session costs $1.50.
Spencer and Julie Penrose, the Broadmoor's world-traveling founders, intended health and wellness to be a cornerstone experience at their resort, where European elegance meets harsh outdoor activities. Hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and stand-up paddleboarding trips are now available to guests. New exercise alternatives include climbing to the top of Pikes Peak and taking the train down, or taking the train to the top of Pikes Peak and bicycling down the curving Pikes Peak Highway, which coincides with the reopening of The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
The renowned spa at the resort offers both standard treatments like deep tissue massages and facials as well as more creative options. The Wine Down package ($445) includes a chardonnay sugar scrub, massage, manicure, and pedicure, as well as grape seed extract.
