Celebrating the City, Museum of the City of New York

Recent Photography Acquisitions from the Joy of Giving Something highlights a gift that significantly improved the Museum's already outstanding photography collection, telling the story of "Celebrating the city". The exhibition is a stirring celebration of the ability of photography to capture New York and New Yorkers, juxtaposing powerful contemporary photographs with work by some of the 20th century's most significant photographers, including the Museum's inaugural photographs by Robert Frank and William Klein. The exhibition includes more than 100 images from almost a century ago that depict the city's people, street scenes, and fever dream moments.

The oldest piece in the collection, a photograph of the Harlem Bridge by John Reid, was taken in 1870. Other photographs in the exhibit include "only in New York moments" like a llama riding in a cab through Times Square! Photographs have long told the ongoing story of New York, where the visual craft takes on a whole new form given that the city is saturated with new subjects at every turn. Intriguing and humorous pictures of the city's skyline, inhabitants, street scenes, events, and much more can be found throughout NYC's history. This gallery of pictures was put together by the charity Joy of Giving Something, and it's a real celebration of New York and New Yorkers.
