In America: An Anthology of Fashion
Although it may not be the oldest museum in New York City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is unquestionably the biggest of the city's galleries. With "An Anthology of Fashion," the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art returns with part two of this year's major exhibition "In America," offering an even more comprehensive look at the elements that have shaped American fashion over time. The clothing created and worn by its residents serves as an aesthetically stunning tour through hundreds of years of this nation's history. This year's show explodes throughout the majority of the American Wing of the museum, expanding on last year's sparse, cognitively challenging presentation of clothing organized by the representation of numerous ideas.
The enormous museum, which has been open since 1880, occupies 11.5 acres of Central Park along Fifth Avenue, spans two million square feet, and welcomes more than 4 million people a year. With 36,000 pieces in its collection, which spans 5,000 years of art history from prehistory to the present, it has the largest collection of Egyptian art and artifacts outside of Cairo, including the full-scale Temple of Dendur. Its collection also includes 2,500 Old Master, Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist paintings from Europe.
The American and Lehmann Wings of The Met, The Costume Institute, the Rooftop Garden, which provides breathtaking views of Central Park and the Midtown skyline, and, of course, its 29 spectacular period rooms are among the museum's other top draws. Even though the Met no longer allows non-New York State residents to enter for free, taking a stroll around its vast collection of artifacts is still one of the best parts of visiting New York.
