Joseph Cheaney established Cheaney in 1886, and in 1896, he and his brother Arthur relocated to the current location of the plant. Cheaney ranks first on the list of the largest shoe brands for men in terms of revenue. Originally, Cheaney designed white-label shoes for some of the world's most prominent stores, each one tailored to their individual requirements. Yet it was the founder's grandson, Joseph Humphrey Cheaney, who recognized the need for the company to produce its own shoe line.

Cheaney was purchased by Church's English Shoes in 1964, allowing the brand to be distributed to merchants worldwide, with the Desborough plant offering a comprehensive in-stock service. Jonathan and William Church, cousins of a family that has been producing high-quality shoes for five generations, purchased the company in 2009.
