Climate Change Communication
Climate Change Communication is one of the Online Climate Change Courses worth considering. This course covers the fundamentals of climate science as well as communication strategies to help educators, volunteers, and individuals talk about climate change in order to inspire action. This course is part of a climate communication training program for volunteers at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), which combines content and strategies from the NMNH, the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Network for Climate Change Interpretation (NNOCCI), Visualizing Change, and the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE).
This self-paced course consists of four lessons: Why should talk about climate change?; Climate science focuses on the Earth's past climate, current drivers, the effects of climate change, and potential solutions.; People's perceptions of climate change; Strategies for Facilitation.
Each lesson lasts about 20 minutes to an hour and includes a short non-graded quiz. The first lesson discusses the importance of having climate change conversations in educational settings. The second lesson introduces climate science concepts by introducing Earth's past climate history, climate change drivers, and examples of impacts and solutions. There are also examples of Smithsonian climate work in the lesson. The third lesson delves into current research on public perceptions and beliefs about climate change, as well as how these perceptions have evolved in the United States over time. The final lesson introduces several strategies for engaging in meaningful discussions about climate change.
