Copperbelt University

Number two among the best universities in Zambia is Copperbelt University (CBU). It was established as a public university on December 1, 1987 and now has five campuses: Jambo Drive Main Campus, Parklands Campus, Ndola Campus, Kapasa Makasa Campus, and TAZARA Campus. CBU began with two schools: the School of Business and the School of Environmental Studies (later renamed School of Built Environment). The university has since expanded to six schools and a directorate. The Zambia Institute of Technology was renamed the School of Technology in 1989. The School of Forestry and Wood Science was founded in 1995. It was renamed the School of Natural Resources in 2001.


The Centre for Life Long Education was established in 1990 to run short courses, seminars, conferences and distance education. The Centre began offering certificate, diploma, and degree programs in 2001. CBU is one of Zambia's three public universities, and its programs attract over 5000 applications each year for the 1200 available places. CBU has 695 staff members, 207 of whom are academic staff, and a total student population of 5,155.
