Cow and Calf Rock, St John
The final spot in the best places for Scuba Diving in the United States Virgin Islands is impossible not to mention Cow and Calf Rock. These two dive sites are sometimes referred to as one and are typically dived on the same two-tank dive. They are accessible from both St John and St Thomas. The name is derived from the two above-the-surface boulders that serve as the dive's focal point. There are spectacular cliffs, huge canyons, and massive caverns at the location. This intriguing dive location has a lot of boulders that reach to and beyond the surface. From a distance, these two rocks resemble a whale and her young. The calf is a tiny rock with various shelves and ledges for smaller marine species to shelter on. The cow (female whale) is the bigger of the two rocks and has several swim-throughs. The most common is a champagne cork, which will shoot the diver up through the hole under the correct conditions. There is always good visibility, and the greatest depth is 40 feet (ca. 12 m).
