David Ben-Gurion retired from office twice

David Ben-Gurion created a number of initiatives as prime minister to maintain the security and respect of the fledgling State of Israel around the globe. He had to temporarily leave politics despite his zeal. He left his positions as defense minister and prime minister in 1954 but continued to serve in the Knesset. In 1955, following the resignation of the Lavon and Pinhas Lavon Traders, he took over as Secretary of Defense once more. After the 1955 election, he was elected prime minister once more later that year. He finally resigned from his position as prime minister in June 1963 for "personal reasons." There were rumors that a dispute inside his party was the reason for his resignation.


David Ben-Gurion
stepped down from the Knesset and all political duties in 1970. In the kibbutz Sde-Boqer in the Negev, southern Israel, he devoted himself to writing his memoirs. He has authored numerous books. The book is an anthology of writings and talks. He spent the majority of his time studying the Bible and the history of the Jewish population in Palestine.
