Donut Queen shop is beloved by its neighbors, thanks to its doughnuts’ deep color from a longer fry in shortening. It’s often hard to even tell if Donut Queen is open. The small, rundown space is cluttered with empty shelves, and there are no tables or even a register in sight. What are on display, though, are the colossal apple fritters, about the size of a small child. As delicious as they are—crispy and sugary on the outside, fluffy on the inside with big chunks of apple—it’s a challenge to get through the whole thing. This east-side doughnut shop knows its way around a fry, with hazelnut-brown rings topped with colorful glazes and sprinkles. However, Donut Queen is best known for its gigantic apple fritters, a mountain range of sweet dough blanketed in a faint-white icing. Donut Queen is open for walk-ins and pre-orders.
