Because of its central location on SE Grand, the cheerfully blue Delicious Donuts gets plenty of traffic and is likely the shop with the freshest fried doughnuts. The multi-hued range of donuts that exist at other shops is swapped out for treats swathed in sweet and savory honey and sea salt. Donut Queen shop is beloved by its neighbors, thanks to its doughnuts’ deep color from a longer fry in shortening. That means these doughnuts have a nice touch of crispness that gives way to a light, soft crumb. The shop serves vegan doughnuts on Saturdays, with curbside pickup available for those who call ahead.

It’s often hard to even tell if Donut Queen is open. The small, rundown space is cluttered with empty shelves, and there are no tables or even a register in sight. What are on display, though, are the colossal apple fritters, about the size of a small child. As delicious as they are—crispy and sugary on the outside, fluffy on the inside with big chunks of apple—it’s a challenge to get through the whole thing. This east-side doughnut shop knows its way around a fry, with hazelnut-brown rings topped with colorful glazes and sprinkles. Voodoo Doughnut’s second Portland location has ample parking and far shorter lines than the downtown location, making it a good choice for Voodoo visitors wishing to avoid a commotion. The eastside shops boast all the same flavors that made Voodoo Doughnuts famous, like maple bacon, “Old Dirty Bastard,” and the “maple blazer blunt.” Orders can be placed online or in person. Some of the doughnuts here land on the dense side, but what Angel’s does offer is a number of fritters that almost lean toward a moist cake, saturated with syrups or jams.
