Portland has sneakily become quite the place to head to for donut lovers, maybe because it’s home to an increasing amount of legendary shops. Portlanders also ... read more...

  1. Doe Donuts ranks 1st on the list of the best donuts in Portland. They are heartfelt and refreshing flavors of donuts, ice cream, soft serve, and more. Considering the culture of the city, it was inevitable that a vegan donut shop would land here. What was not inevitable, however, was just how damn good it would be. Even the most devoted donut connoisseur might be fooled, due to just how high quality they are. From the seasonal fruit donut to the standbys like the Earl Gray-tinged Portland Fog and the strawberry milk and sprinkles, each is made from scratch in-house, mostly with locally sourced ingredients.

Doe Donuts even has savory offerings, which are surprisingly fun. In a shiny new location in Portland, Doe Donuts is the vegan answer to both Blue Star and Voodoo. Doughnut flavors are on the more creative side, with flavors like pink lemonade, taro, and french toast. Although the doughnuts are on the pricier end of the spectrum, Doe makes all its ingredients in-house and donates to various local charities each month. Doughnuts can be ordered at the store or through Postmates and Doordash.

  2. Delicious Donuts ranks 2nd on the list of the best donuts in Portland. A classic donut shop with an old-school motif, these donuts primarily operate as a bulk store for cafes and restaurants. However, customers can buy directly starting early in the morning at 5 am (except Sundays, when it’s closed), and keep buying until 1 pm. The shop also has a full breakfast menu, including breakfast sandwiches that can be served on a donut for peak indulgence.

Because of its central location on SE Grand, the cheerfully blue Delicious Donuts gets plenty of traffic and is likely the shop with the freshest fried doughnuts. The parking lot can get cramped and crowded with folks grabbing doughnuts on their way to work, but it’s still worth a stop for fluffy maple bars. Pro tip: Delicious Donuts does take reservations for particular pastries by phone, for those who want to reserve a peanut maple cake doughnut. Delicious Donuts eschews traditional donut shop norms by serving exclusively two different kinds of donuts: Berliner and cruller. The Berliner is the flagship, holeless fluffy doughnuts topped with glaze and filled with everything from a standard Boston cream filling to, no joke, pimento cheese. These fluffy treats live up to the name, but if they’re not your interest, the delicate crullers are exemplars of the style. The shop also offers a basic but delicious breakfast sandwich.

  3. Pip's Original Doughnuts and Chai is one of the best donuts in Portland. Pip exudes warmth with golden pastries and warm chai. The multi-hued range of donuts that exist at other shops is swapped out for treats swathed in sweet and savory honey and sea salt. They keep it simple but delicious with just a handful of coatings and toppings to select from. They’re all made to order, so you can enjoy them hot and fresh, whether it’s from the brick-and-mortar or roving cart.

You won’t find a lit-up case filled with rows of brightly frosted pastries here, but that’s a very good thing. These are the sliders of donuts, and the ones covered in sweet and savory honey and sea salt could be devoured by the dozen (honestly, they all could). And they’re made to order, giving you the ultimate in donut freshness, whether at the storefront or out of the roaming cart you’ll find popping up all over town. Of course, it’s not complete without a cup of steaming hot housemade Chai to go with the dozen donuts you’ve just ordered.

  4. Unlike other doughnuts on this list, NOLA makes its doughnuts from laminated dough (the same kind used for croissants and puff pastry danishes), resulting in flaky donuts with a crisp, craggy texture for sugar to comfortably settle in. They also make beignets and more standard yeast-raised doughnuts. All but the laminated doughnuts (La’ssants) are available for preorder online. Nola Doughnuts is relatively new to the PDX foodie scene, but they no doubt serve some of the best donuts in Portland, in particular, some of the best croissant-style donuts!

Tasting just as beautiful as they look, these donuts are truly unforgettable with flavors like salted double chocolate, spice honey walnut, and s’mores (our personal favorite). Whether you decide to sample a traditional or specialty donut, we know you’re going to be head over heels for these donuts. NOLA Doughnuts serves not only some of the best donuts in Portland but unquestionably the best vegan donuts in Portland. Sink your teeth into any of their homemade donuts and you’ll see why vegans and non-vegans alike love these donuts. They have a year-round menu as well as seasonal favorites.

  5. Donut Queen shop is beloved by its neighbors, thanks to its doughnuts’ deep color from a longer fry in shortening. That means these doughnuts have a nice touch of crispness that gives way to a light, soft crumb. The shop serves vegan doughnuts on Saturdays, with curbside pickup available for those who call ahead.

It’s often hard to even tell if Donut Queen is open. The small, rundown space is cluttered with empty shelves, and there are no tables or even a register in sight. What are on display, though, are the colossal apple fritters, about the size of a small child. As delicious as they are—crispy and sugary on the outside, fluffy on the inside with big chunks of apple—it’s a challenge to get through the whole thing. This east-side doughnut shop knows its way around a fry, with hazelnut-brown rings topped with colorful glazes and sprinkles. However, Donut Queen is best known for its gigantic apple fritters, a mountain range of sweet dough blanketed in a faint-white icing. Donut Queen is open for walk-ins and pre-orders.

  6. Voodoo Doughnut’s second Portland location has ample parking and far shorter lines than the downtown location, making it a good choice for Voodoo visitors wishing to avoid a commotion. The eastside shops boast all the same flavors that made Voodoo Doughnuts famous, like maple bacon, “Old Dirty Bastard,” and the “maple blazer blunt.” Orders can be placed online or in person. Some of the doughnuts here land on the dense side, but what Angel’s does offer is a number of fritters that almost lean toward a moist cake, saturated with syrups or jams.

Portland’s iconic donut brand, Voodoo began the city’s donut revolution with pastry themes and names as wacky as its flavors. Just expect to wait an hour to try one. That’s not to say that the donuts aren’t worth it. Try Instagram-worthy flavors like Oh Captain, My Captain (vanilla frosting and Captain Crunch); Mango Tango (filled with mango jelly and topped with vanilla frosting and Tang); Guava Colada (filled with Guava jelly and topped with vanilla frosting, flake coconut, and toothpick umbrella); and Ring of Fire (chocolate cake doughnut dusted in cinnamon sugar, cayenne pepper and topped with dried red chili pepper).

  7. Sesame Donuts ranks 7th on the list of the best donuts in Portland. It has multiple doughnut counters throughout the greater Portland area, making it the most commuter-accessible on this list. The original location on the Beaverton-Hillsdale.The highway is a good choice for people on the west side, as it’s open 24 hours, but the downtown shop is still open, as well. The shop’s doughnuts are reminiscent of Dunkin Donuts, but better — expect a lighter, fresher dough and more care given to glazes and toppings.

With multiple locations, Sesame offers a standard chain experience like a Dunkin’ or Winchell’s with racks of colorful O’s behind glass doors. However, these donuts are much better, with a lighter, fresher dough and thoughtful attention to detail, particularly in their glazes and toppings. Expect all the traditional flavors, as well as some more novel options like a lemon poppy seed—but be sure to try their namesake donut! For a late-night snack, the Raleigh Hills location is open 24/7. Several locations have closed since the start of the pandemic, but the remaining ones take pre-orders online and serve walk-ins as well.

  8. One of the best donuts in Portland is Blue Star Donuts. It is a culinarily-minded doughnut chain in Portland — in shops that are bright, airy, and modern, Blue Star crafts brioche-based doughnuts topped and filled with ingredients more commonly found in a high-end pastry chef’s kitchen. Although the doughnuts are much pricier than most and have a heavier, denser crumb than a traditional raised doughnut, it’s worth the occasional stop to indulge in fancy varieties like Valrhona chocolate, passionfruit, cacao nib, and blueberry bourbon.

Blue Star Donuts is a name you’ve likely heard of before, and that’s because they indeed serve some of the very best donuts in Portland. You’re coming here for an elevated, artisanal donut experience. Picture homemade brioche donuts topped with the utmost fresh and delicious toppings and you’re practically eating a donut from Blue Star. There are eight locations in Portland, so find the brick and mortar nearest you and arrive with a decent appetite. You won’t find a bad donut at here but unanimous all-stars are the buttermilk old-fashioned, passion fruit cocoa nib, and Valrhona chocolate crunch donuts.

  9. Coco Donuts ranks 9th on the list of the best donuts in Portland. Visitors having trouble deciding should ask for Coco’s signature doughnut, a raised chocolate glazed topped with Coco’s own house-roasted chocolate-covered coffee beans and a dusting of cacao. Another bonus: Coco is one of the only places that regularly serves springy mochi doughnuts, as opposed to pop-ups like Heyday with rotating locations. Orders can be placed online or at any of Coco Donuts’ five open counters in the Portland area; Coco also offers delivery through Grubhub and P-Town Couriers.

Coco Donuts are very delicious. With locations in several Portland neighborhoods including the PSU campus, Brooklyn/Sellwood, Williams, Broadway, Downtown, and Uptown (the original location), you can always count on this local donut shop for delicious, handcrafted donuts. If you can only try two donuts here, get the buttermilk and the cake crumb donut. The maple bar, lavender glazed, and apple fritter are also solid choices. There’s no going wrong with butter and buttermilk, particularly when they result in a deep-fried treat. These donuts are created with an old family recipe with an emphasis on the classics—glazed, jelly, and twists. Don’t miss Coco’s signature donut, a glazed, raised chocolate topped with Coco’s house-roasted chocolate-covered coffee beans with a sprinkling of cacao.
