Fort Duvernette
Fort Duvernette, also known as Rock Fort, was built in the 1790s and towers above Calliaqua Bay and Indian Bay. Its cannons are mounted on a 58-meter (190-foot) volcanic plug that protrudes from the sea on St Vincent's windward side. The fort was designed to safeguard Calliaqua, the colonial center where sugar was loaded into ships destined for English ports.
This creepy fort, perched atop a massive volcanic rock off the coast of Villa, was built to defend the hamlet of Calliaqua and offers amazing 360-degree views of the southern shoreline. The spiral staircase carved into the rock has 225 steps; be careful as it can be slippery, with small stones sometimes carpeting the route so remember to wear appropriate footwear. There are two cannon batteries and a picnic area at the top, which is 200 feet above sea level.
The surrounding is breathtaking with rich vegetation. White sea orchids and sea grass can be found in the water surrounding the fort. You should also keep an eye out for little lizards and bats on the property. Fort Duvernette has a magical quality as a result of all of this.
