The hilly area of Fouta Djallon, often called Futa Jallon, is located in west-central Guinea. The terrain, which is made up of a succession of graded sandstone plateaus with many scenic trenches and gorges, acts as the watershed for some of Western Africa's most important rivers.
The Fouta Djallon has a size of 30,000 square miles at an average elevation of 3,000 feet. Mount Loura rises in Mali, with its highest peak. The Gambia, Bafing (Sénégal), Koliba, Kolenté (Great Scarcies), Kaba (Little Scarcies), and Konkouré rivers all have their origins in the Fouta Djallon's central plateau. The eastern slopes of the Fouta supply many Niger River tributaries, and its extension to the far southeast holds the Niger's source.
