Popular Chinese cartoon series The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, or Donghua, is based on the book "Mo Dao Zu Shi" by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The English title "The Founder of Diabolism" is another name for it. G.C. May Animation & Film developed the Donghua adaptation, which debuted in 2018.

Wei Wuxian, a strong cultivator who becomes known as the Yiling Patriarch, is the main character of the novel. Because he uses demonic energy in his cultivation techniques, he is feared and misunderstood by others. Wei Wuxian is reincarnated into the persona of Mo Xuanyu, a young member of the Mo family who wants vengeance on his clan, after his death.

Wei Wuxian meets Lan Wangji, an upright planter from the Lan clan, in his new life. As they uncover a plot that jeopardizes the horticulture industry, the two come together in an odd alliance. Together, they must overcome a number of obstacles, such as demonic beings, political machinations, and their own delicate relationship. The plot incorporates aspects of romance, mystery, fantasy, and action.

The "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" adaptation for Donghua amassed a sizable following both in China and beyond. It was praised for its complex storyline, well-rounded characters, and gorgeous animation. A live-action version of the series, a manhua (Chinese comic), and numerous items were also produced as a result.
