Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone
The Philosophers Stone is the final Harry Potter book on the list. J.K. Rowling's fantasy novel is the first in the Harry Potter series and marks Rowling's debut. Bloomsbury released the book in the United Kingdom on June 26, 1997, and it was released in the United States the following year under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
Harry Potter considers himself to be an ordinary young man. He lives with Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and cousin Dudley, who force him to sleep in a cupboard beneath the stairs. Then Harry begins to receive mysterious letters, and his life is forever altered. A beetle-eyed giant of a man whisks him away and enrolls him in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The reason for this is that Harry Potter is a wizard!
The novel went on to win a slew of British and American book awards, and it soared to the top of the New York Times list of best-selling fiction in 1999, where it remained until 2000. It has been translated into 73 languages and was the first in the series to be adapted into a feature film of the same name.
