Heineken Regatta
The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta began in 1980 as the St. Maarten Regatta, with only 12 yachts competing. Heineken became a significant sponsor of the St. Maarten Regatta three years later, in 1983, and the event's name was changed to 'Heineken'. Heineken paid a price of 3,750 guilders (about $ 2,100) to participate. While racing, the contestants were treated to ice-cold Heineken beers from a passing powerboat.
The event increased quickly after Heineken's involvement. The event rose to 187 boats in 1995 and 251 boats in 1999 after adding a third day in 1990. In 2005, the Commodore's Cup was added as another racing day. In 2008, 284 boats competed in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, breaking the previous record.
The Heineken Regatta is a world-class international sailing competition. There's much to do on the mainland, both during and after the race (although, Curacao remains an island). During the Heineken Regatta, there are numerous arranged events, including performances by globally known performers. To put it another way, this is an event for every sailing fan, as well as anyone else.
