One of the biggest oil businesses in Southeast Europe, Helleniq Energy Holdings Societe Anonyme, was founded in 1958 with the construction of Greece's first oil refinery, Aspropyrgos.

Following a corporate reorganization, it changed from the Public Petroleum Corporation S.A. (Greek: DEP) to its current name in 1998. It is a group of six subsidiaries as well as a number of other businesses over which it exercises varied levels of managerial control.

Thessaloniki, Elefsina, and Aspropyrgos are the three refineries in Greece that Hellenic Petroleum operates; Motor Oil Hellas is responsible for the remaining 43% of the nation's refining capacity. Additionally, OKTA owns OKTA facilities for the marketing and transportation of petroleum products in Skopje, Republic of North Macedonia.

The refineries receive their crude oil from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Libya, and Russia. Additionally, the corporation runs about 300 petrol stations in Serbia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Montenegro, and the Republic of North Macedonia, in addition to about 1700 petrol stations under the BP and EKO brands in Greece. Additionally, it has a network that offers lubricants, jet fuel, LPG, and marine fuels.
