Hey Ram
Hey Ram is a 2000 Indian historical drama film written, directed and produced by Kamal Haasan, who also acted as the protagonist. It was simultaneously made in Tamil and Hindi languages. The film's soundtrack and score were composed by Ilaiyaraaja. It is an alternate history film that depicts India's Partition and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse.
The film's title comes from the last words Gandhi is said to have uttered before he was assassinated, "Hey Ram" (Oh, God!). The film begins in 1947, just after India has been partitioned into India and Pakistan. Saket Ram (Kamal Haasan), a Hindu radio broadcaster, is devastated by the violence and hatred that has erupted between the two communities.
Saket's life is further shattered when his wife, Aparna, is raped and murdered during the riots. He becomes consumed by a desire for revenge, and he joins a group of Hindu extremists who are planning to assassinate Mahatma Gandhi. However, as Saket gets closer to Gandhi, he begins to question his beliefs. He realizes that Gandhi's message of peace and non-violence is the only way to heal the wounds of India's division.
Hey Ram is a powerful and moving film about the dangers of hatred and the importance of forgiveness. It is a film that will stay with you long after you have seen it.
