Human Resources Management Specialization: HR for People Managers
This specialty gives a thorough introduction to human resource management's essential ideas, policies, and practices. The specialty begins with a foundational course that examines alternative methods to human resource management, gives a background on the legal environment in which employees are employed, dismissed, rewarded, and managed in the United States, and defines the many motivations for individuals to work. The following three classes focus on three key areas that all managers should be familiar with: recruiting, reviewing, and rewarding people. Throughout the courses, an approach is used that is both accessible and scientific, such that best practices and practical recommendations are influenced by research but presented in a way that is both accessible and applicable.
Learners will gain a greater knowledge of what works in the workplace after finishing the specialty, as well as a toolset of best practices for hiring, managing, and rewarding people. Managers and entrepreneurs taking on these duties, as well as anybody else interested in the fundamental concepts of human resource management, will benefit from the specialty. The Capstone Project will allow you to apply what you've learned in class to a real-world context, such as your own company or work unit if desired.
The projects apply what you've learned in class to specific work groups that you select (e.g., your own work team). You'll learn how to identify important obstacles in staffing, performance management, and compensation ahead of time, and then use that information to develop strategies and plans for tackling these issues in the context of your selected work group.
