J. Huston Tavern
The next position on the list of the oldest restaurants in America is J. Huston Tavern. With a history stretching back to 1834, Houston Tavern is Missouri's oldest restaurant as well as the oldest continually serving restaurant west of the Mississippi. Joseph Huston, Sr., an early settler of Arrow Rock and a civic leader from Virginia, was the first to open the restaurant. It was also the Huston family's residence.
J. Huston Tavern expanded in the mid-nineteenth century, adding a mercantile store and a ballroom to the second level. In 1955, a new dining room and a modernized kitchen were added. Friends of Arrow Rock Inc. has been running J. Huston Tavern since the beginning of 2019.
In one of the three dining rooms of this warm, charming restaurant, that once served as a family home, you may savor a filling lunch. Alternatively, relax with a glass of wine or another beverage in the former mercantile store's Tap Room. Then, peruse the menu brimming with traditional fare, tasty appetizers, and fresh salads. Take a bite of a chicken salad, a wilted spinach salad, or a delightful strawberry and spinach salad.
