  1. The first position on the list of the oldest restaurants in America is The White Horse Tavern. It is thought to be the oldest tavern in the United States, having been built before 1673. In Newport, Rhode Island, it sits on the corner of Farewell and Marlborough streets. It is also regarded as the world's tenth-oldest restaurant still in operation. Because of its size, the White Horse Tavern served as a gathering venue for the Colony's General Assembly, Criminal Court, and City Council.

The Van Bueren family of Newport donated money to renovate the White Horse Tavern in 1952 when it was in bad shape and on the verge of being demolished. The White Horse Tavern was just purchased by its ninth owner in 2014. They offer the freshest fish, clams, and lobsters straight from Narragansett Bay, as well as recently-picked produce, artisan cheese, honey, prime cuts of beef, and the highest quality chops and poultry from local farms, just as previous generations have done. They're happy to be a part of Rhode Island's thriving food culture, which has helped the White Horse Tavern become a New England favorite.

  2. Fraunces Tavern is a museum and restaurant in New York City, located at 54 Pearl Street and Broad Street in Lower Manhattan's Financial District. Before, during, and after the American Revolution, the site played a significant role in history. Fraunces Tavern functioned as George Washington's headquarters, a forum for peace discussions with the British, and a location for federal offices during the Early Republic.

Fraunces Tavern has been owned by Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York Inc. since 1904, and they say it is Manhattan's oldest surviving building after a massive conjectural rebuild. The museum examines the structure and its history, as well as hosts a variety of art and artifact exhibitions. The tavern is a tourist attraction, as well as a stop on the American Whiskey Trail and the New York Freedom Trail. It is a New York City recognized landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Furthermore, Fraunces Tavern is situated in a National Historic Historic District and a New York City recognized landmark district.

  3. The Griswold Inn, in Essex, Connecticut, is one of the country's oldest continuously operating pubs. It was founded by three brothers in the late 18th century and named after the local Griswold family, and it has only been stewarded by six families since then. During the War of 1812, British troops took the inn and used it as a base of operations. It continued to provide a bustling entertainment schedule for the area yachtsmen even during prohibition. Several adjacent structures were built to the inn complex over the years, each with its own distinct history. The gothic soap series Dark Shadows used it as a filming location as well.

Several historic artifacts can be seen on the inn's walls. Paintings of notable ships from the age of sail and steam are prominently displayed, while the Gun Room has a collection of antique weaponry. Antonio Jacobsen, the country's most prolific painter of maritime art, maintains the greatest privately held collection of his works at the inn.

Executive Chef Toppin delivers classic American cuisine to perfection in their historic dining rooms in simple yet inventive ways. Fresh fish, aged beef, and the finest chops and poultry are included on his menu. Chef Toppin's house-made desserts are a "must" after any dinner. Our historic dining rooms ooze character, charm, and tradition, and are equally at home in casual or "black tie" dresses. They serve lunch and dinner seven days a week.

  4. The Old Talbott Tavern, also known as the Old Stone Tavern, is a historic tavern in Bardstown, Kentucky, located across from the old Nelson County Courthouse in the Bardstown Historic District. On October 30, 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. While exiled in 1797, Louis-Philippe of France (King of France from 1830 to 1848) lived at Old Talbott Tavern. Murals painted by Louis-Philippe and a member of his entourage were unearthed in the twentieth century and displayed until a fire in 1998 destroyed them.

Since its founding in 1779, the tavern has never closed, according to legend. There are also rumors of guests who have never checked out. Each room is named after a historical figure who is rumored to haunt the space. It is most certainly the oldest surviving structure in Kentucky.

The current eastern section of the pub was built of two-foot-thick stone walls and massive roof beams, with two separate fireplaces for cooking the food. It contained two guest rooms on the second floor at first: one for men and one for women, as individual guest rooms were not common in the United States until the early nineteenth century. A century later, the brick western part was added.

  5. The Golden Lamb Inn, which opened in 1803 in the Warren County seat of Lebanon, is Ohio's oldest hotel. The current four-story structure was erected at the time of the inn's rebuilding in 1815, and it retains its colonial architecture. Because that image is featured on its signboard for the benefit of the illiterate, it is known as the Golden Lamb. It has been known as the Ownly Hotel, the Bradley House, the Lebanon House, and the Stubbs House at different times.

The Golden Lamb was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 12, 1978. Since its founding in Lebanon, Ohio, on the highway between Cincinnati and Columbus, the Golden Lamb has hosted a number of notable visitors, including 12 American presidents: William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, Warren G. Harding, William Howard Taft, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush.

The Golden Lamb's beating heart is the Blackhorse Tavern. It's more than a location; it's a promise. The location and offerings have been redesigned with the help of artists and craftspeople from the past.

  6. The Log Inn is Indiana's oldest restaurant and one of America's oldest inns/stagecoach stops. Henry Haub, the namesake of the town where the Log Inn is located, was the first to open the inn and restaurant. The Log Inn was located along the Dixie Highway, which was subsequently renamed US 41, and attracted a large number of visitors. The Log Inn is only open in the afternoons five days a week these days, but it has been featured in Food Network's Best of Viewer's Choice Program.

The Log Inn is a family-style restaurant in Gibson County, Indiana's southeastern Johnson Township. Mr. Henry Haub, the namesake of neighboring Haubstadt, founded it around 1825. It has hosted Abraham Lincoln, served as a stop on the Underground Railroad and served as a halt on the Dixie Highway, the principal road connecting Chicago and Florida that later became US 41. 7. One of the oldest restaurants in America is the Union Oyster House which has been serving diners since 1826, is one of the country's oldest operational restaurants, and the oldest known to have been open continuously since its founding. On May 27, 2003, the structure was designated as a National Historic Landmark. The Union Oyster House, near Faneuil Hall on the Freedom Trail, holds the distinction of being America's oldest eatery.

While several of the restaurants on this list are older, Union Oyster House claims to be the United States' oldest continually functioning restaurant, as it has been in the same location since 1826. The structure that houses Union Oyster House is considerably older, dating back to at least 1714 and having been utilized for a variety of companies before becoming a restaurant.

Surprisingly, Union Oyster House's menu hasn't altered much over the years, and it's always featured an oyster bar. Union Oyster House also serves typical New England fare such as meats and baked beans, in addition to seafood.

  8. The next position on the list of the oldest restaurants in America is J. Huston Tavern. With a history stretching back to 1834, Houston Tavern is Missouri's oldest restaurant as well as the oldest continually serving restaurant west of the Mississippi. Joseph Huston, Sr., an early settler of Arrow Rock and a civic leader from Virginia, was the first to open the restaurant. It was also the Huston family's residence.

    J. Huston Tavern expanded in the mid-nineteenth century, adding a mercantile store and a ballroom to the second level. In 1955, a new dining room and a modernized kitchen were added. Friends of Arrow Rock Inc. has been running J. Huston Tavern since the beginning of 2019.

In one of the three dining rooms of this warm, charming restaurant, that once served as a family home, you may savor a filling lunch. Alternatively, relax with a glass of wine or another beverage in the former mercantile store's Tap Room. Then, peruse the menu brimming with traditional fare, tasty appetizers, and fresh salads. Take a bite of a chicken salad, a wilted spinach salad, or a delightful strawberry and spinach salad.

  9. In the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, at 713 rue St. Louis (St. Louis Street), there is a Louisiana Creole restaurant called Antoine's. It was founded in 1840 by Antoine Alciatore, making it one of the country's first family-run eateries. The birthplace of several well-known dishes, including Oysters Rockefeller, Pompano en Papillote, Eggs Sardou, and Pigeonneaux Paradis, makes it a significant New Orleans institution. Numerous dishes from Antoine's legacy can be found in the fifth-generation owner Roy F. Guste's cookbook, Antoine's Cookbook. Several U.S. presidents and Pope John Paul II are among its notable VIP clients.

With 15 dining rooms of various sizes and themes, including some with Mardi Gras krewe artifacts, Antoine's has a wine storage facility with a 25,000 bottle capacity. Classic French-Creole cuisine can be found on the extensive menu, which is now available in both French and English. By tradition, it's closed to the general public during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Mardi Gras. On these "Closed Days," it may be designated for private events. On weekends and during Mardi Gras, reservations are required for eating. Rich Lee will be the executive chef as of March 2020.

  10. The Tadich Grill is situated in San Francisco's Financial District in California, the United States. As a coffee stand when it first opened in 1849, it is San Francisco's oldest continuously operating eatery. The Tadich Roast marketed itself as the first American eatery to grill seafood over mesquite charcoal, a traditional Croatian technique, in the 1920s.

Seafood, stews, and casseroles are the main dishes on the menu today. Seafood like Dungeness crab and sanddab are among the locally derived ingredients. Additionally, the establishment provides a day-of-the-week menu that hasn't changed in many years. Mondays include a lamb roast, Tuesdays feature beef tongue, while Thursdays have corned beef and cabbage. The majority, if not all, of the menu items, are prepared in the restaurant, and oysters are another prominent dish. The Tadich actively avoids selling fish that is overfished, limiting sales of fish like sea bass. The only frozen fish available at the restaurant is prawns.

In the New York Times, Sadie Stein wrote in 2013 that the restaurant is "Festive without being stuffy, it offers a taste of the San Francisco of yore while embracing the present day". The restaurant opened a branch in Washington, DC in 2015. It closed in 2018.
