Kia K5
The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima, is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada and Malaysia, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
Last year's Kia Optima was a Top Safety Pick. The Optima has been replaced by the sharper-looking K5, and Kia's mid-size sedan is safer than ever. Part of what makes the K5 safer is its added pedestrian-detection technology. Good and Superior ratings were awarded by the IIHS, but there were mixed results during headlight testing. Four different variations were tested. K5 GT-Line and GT models built after November 2020 have the best headlights with LED projectors. However, those same trims built before December 2020 received a Poor rating for inadequate visibility in all four headlight tests. The newest K5 LX, LXS, GT-Line, EX, and GT received an Acceptable rating for their shared LED reflectors.
Some outstanding safety specifications:
- Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist w/ Pedestrian Detection (FCA-Ped) works independently of the driver in critical situations, applying the brakes to help prevent or lessen the effects of a frontal collision.
- Driver Attention Warning (DAW) with Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA) monitors the driver and will provide alerts if it senses the driver's attention level has been significantly reduced. Additionally, the system alerts the driver when a leading vehicle begins to move forward from a still position.
- Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) may apply corrective steering if it senses you drifting outside your lane.
- Lane Following Assist (LFA) monitors lane markings to keep the K5 centered in its lane.
- Rear Occupant Alert (ROA). Upon exiting the vehicle, the K5 can provide audible and visual warnings if unattended passengers remain in the rear seating area. Furthermore, if enrolled in Kia Connect, the push notification will be sent to the registered account holder upon triggering of audible warning.
- The model is equipped with Dual Front Advanced Airbags, Dual Rear Side Airbags, Full-Length Side Curtain Airbags and Driver's Knee Airbag. These advanced systems help detect the presence of passenger, monitors the severity of an impact and controls airbag inflation accordingly to help reduce injuries in certain collisions.
- The foundation of your Kia's active safety system, the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) uses electronic sensors at each wheel hub to detect when wheels begin to skid. If skidding under braking is detected, ABS modulates brake-force to reduce skidding, which then allows for reduced braking distances, in addition to helping you maintain control of your vehicle.
