La Brea Tar Pits and Museum
The La Brea Tar Pits, located in the center of metropolitan Los Angeles, is one of the world's most famous fossil sites. The La Brea Tar Pits are in Hancock Park, and the Pleistocene Garden, right outside the George C. Page Museum, is home to a large population of life-size ancient animal reconstructions. The museum was established to educate the public about the fossils discovered at the many excavation sites, as well as to pique public interest in paleontology science and methods.
Discover the world's only active Ice Age excavation site in a metropolis. The greatest fossils, animals, and plants unearthed here – mammoths, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and more, are on display within the museum. Outside, observe what the excavators have discovered today in the La Brea Tar Pits, where tar is still bubbling, and at the active fossil excavation sites. The Excavator Tour will help you get the most out of your stay. See scientists working on freshly unearthed fossils, stroll around the iconic Lake Pit, and visit the live dig site, where scientists are discovering new Ice Age specimens every day. Admission to the museum is free.
