Lake Chivero

Zimbabwe's Lake Chivero is a reservoir on the Manyame River. It is considered as one of the best lakes to visit in Zimbabwe. It was once known as Lake McIlwaine in honor of Sir Robert McIlwaine, a former High Court judge and the father of the land and water conservation movement in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). It serves as the city's primary source of water supply and is situated southwest of Harare. The lake was built over a period of 2.5 years, and the public may use it starting in 1952. The dam wall stretches 400 meters. Additionally, irrigation and commercial fishing use the water. Common grass carp, tigerfish, black bream, Clarias gariepinus, yellowfish, and green-headed bream are a few of the fish species that can be found in the lake.

One of the best spots in Zimbabwe to see rhinos in the wild is Lake Chivero. There are numerous white rhinos there that have had their horns removed as an anti-poaching precaution, and you have a high chance of seeing one if you hire a ranger to accompany you. The picturesque lake and rocky outcrops reminiscent of Matobo National Park are the focal points of the Lake Chivero Recreational Park, which is composed of high-veld woods. In addition to rhinos, it is home to a staggering variety of bird species, giraffes, ostriches, zebras, crocodiles, and wildebeest elands. There are also other prehistoric rock-art locations nearby. There is a decent selection of lodging options, ranging from camping to self-catering rooms to more opulent hilltop chalets with swimming pools. It's a fantastic substitute for spending the night in Harare. To have a more tranquil trip, try going during the week as it's a popular weekend getaway for residents.
