Lake Volta
Lake Volta is the largest artificial reservoir in the world based on surface area. This is definitely one of the best lakes to visit in Ghana. It includes Akosombo Dam, which produces a sizable portion of Ghana's electricity. Volta’s total size is 8,502 square kilometers (3,282+12 sq mi), all of which are located within Ghana. It stretches from Akosombo in the south to the country's north. The reservoir is essential to local transportation because it gives ferries and freight ships a navigable canal. It is simple to travel from one side of the reservoir to the other because the waterway can be navigated from Akosombo through Yeji. Although several cruises include the island of Dodi in their itineraries, tourism is not extremely common in the area.
740 communities, 15,000 dwellings, and 78,000 people had to be relocated as a result of the lake's formation. The navigable lake offers a low-cost access from Ghana's northern savanna to the coast. Additionally, it serves as a significant fishing area and provides irrigation water for farms in the arid Accra Plains, which are located just beneath the damsite. The hydroelectric power plant at the dam has a 912 megawatt generating capacity, which it uses to power the aluminum smelter in the port of Tema on the Gulf of Guinea and to meet most of Ghana's other electrical requirements.
