M50
Head to the M50 art complex by the banks of Suzhou Creek to fully immerse yourself in Shanghai's community of modern artists (named for its address at 50 Moganshan Road). In the derelict warehouses of the Chunming Slub Mill, where textiles were once the dominant industry, a maze of studios, galleries, cafés, and boutiques have sprouted. Graffiti adds color to the dilapidated buildings, maintaining the harsh edge. Watch artists paint or weave bamboo into futuristic light fixtures, debate the purpose of perplexing art pieces, and buy handcrafted Shanghai products to take home (think leather purses and ceramic jewelry).
With a collection of modern and contemporary art galleries continually churning out new and fascinating shows, this enormous creative zone is the urban ghetto of Shanghai's art scene. M50 has its own groovy younger sibling vibe going on and is the city's go-to destination for a bit of creative exploring while being considerably smaller than its Beijing counterpart, 798.
