Mainfreight began operations in Auckland, New Zealand in 1978, quickly growing into New Zealand's most extensive freight network. A shift of focus in 1984 saw the opening of the first Mainfreight Air & Ocean branch. Investment in operations in Australia began in the year due to the desire to treat New Zealand and Australia as a single market. Mainfreight's presence in Australia continues to expand through acquisitions and branch expansion across strategic locations.

Mainfreight became a global company in 1999 with the acquisition of businesses in both Asia and the United States. Full ownership of our Asia operations was completed in 2007 and today, Mainfreight has several operating branches in China, Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea. Continued expansion in the US with the 2007 purchase of Target Logistics Services. In 2011, Mainfreight acquired the business of Wim Bosman Corporation, providing further opportunities to expand its global supply chain network. Mainfreight's bridge with branches all over Europe. Mainfreight is built on a 100-year vision. All decisions are made because we will be here for another 100 years.
