Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
Nintendo's Mario Kart Wii is a kart racing game for the Wii that was developed and released by Nintendo. It was launched in April 2008 as the sixth chapter in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart Wii, like its predecessors, features playable characters from the Mario series that compete in races on over 30 distinct race circuits while employing specialized items to impede opponents or gain benefits. The game has a variety of single-player and multiplayer game types, as well as two to four-person split screens. Online multiplayer was enabled until Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was discontinued in May 2014. Mario Kart Wii takes advantage of the motion capabilities on the Wii Remote to deliver intuitive and traditional steering controls.
The game garnered favorable reviews at its first release, with acclaim for its multiplayer mode, characters, novel gameplay, tracks, and karts, but criticism for its item balancing and rubber-band difficulty adjustment. The game sold over 37 million copies, making it the second best-selling Mario Kart game behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, as well as one of the best-selling video games of all time.
