May promote skin health
Gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid essential to the development and maintenance of your skin, is found in large quantities in borage. Borage also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities that can aid in wound healing and rebuild the natural barrier of your skin. According to several studies, borage may help treat a number of common skin issues, including the eczema subtype atopic dermatitis. In one research, 32 children with atopic dermatitis saw a marked reduction in redness and itching when they wore an undershirt coated in borage oil every day for two weeks.
Regarding the efficacy of borage oil for treating atopic dermatitis, another evaluation of 13 research found conflicting evidence, however, it did point out that the majority of studies suggested it would be moderately helpful for treating its symptoms. However, a thorough analysis of 27 trials found that taking oral borage oil supplements did not help to relieve the signs and symptoms of eczema. More research should be done to ascertain how using orally or topically applied borage oil could impact skin health.
