Metal lovers will love this young movie for the variety of metal bands it features. A heartfelt tale about friendship and the struggles of high school is also included. Hunter Sylvester, a metalhead, jams with Kevin Schlieb, an insecure best friend who only plays one drum in the marching band at his school, and who doesn't know how to play a whole drum set very well. Kevin observes Scottish student Emily, who suffers from mental illness, have a full-blown tantrum and leaving the band due to her poor clarinet playing during one of the marching band practices.
That evening, Kevin drags Hunter to Clay Moss' house for a party and tries to seem like a typical youngster while Hunter feels out of place. Hunter gets into a fight with the jock Rocky "Skip" Hoffman as Kevin gets wasted and makes advances on a girl called Kendall. Following this, Hunter learns that the school will host a "Battle of the Bands," which inspires him to sign up his band, Skullfucker, with Kevin. Hunter fraudulently uses his father's AMEX card to purchase $13,500 worth of equipment, including a full drum set for Kevin.
Kevin begins practicing at school, and it turns out that Emily is a talented cellist during one of their sessions. As their relationship develops, Kevin decides to give Jessica a copy of the metal music playlist Hunter gave him as "homework." As a result of the other students' lack of enthusiasm, Hunter's search for a bassist to complete the trio is unsuccessful, and he has a string of run-ins.
