Motto

'Mir wlle bleiwe wat mir sinn' is the country's slogan, which means 'we want to stay the way we are.' This is an indicator that the country want to remain autonomous and unaltered. This alludes to Luxembourg's history of foreign control and its desire to remain independent in the present and future.

Luxembourg was passed between numerous European powers - the French, Spanish, Austrians, and back to the French – which is one of the more interesting facts of the country. Despite the fact that it became an independent state in 1815, Vienna awarded it as a personal asset to the King of the Netherlands. Luxembourg lost half of its territory to Belgium in 1839, but retained increased authority over the remaining areas, and became a fully autonomous, neutral state in 1867 with the Treaty of London.

Luxembourg's slogan conveys a powerful message that should be admired and appreciated. The Luxembourgers are proud of it and their nation, and you'll notice this during your visit.
