MS World Discoverer
Schichau Unterweser, Germany created and constructed the cruise liner MS World Discoverer in 1974. The ship's construction, known as BEWA Discoverer, was finished in Bremerhaven, Germany. The ship was damaged after colliding with an underwater obstruction in 2000; as a result, it was grounded and abandoned near the Solomon Islands to avoid sinking.
The 46° list World Discoverer is still anchored in Roderick Bay on the Nggela Islands. The ship had been looted by locals and other factions when it was discovered by the nearest salvage companies, based in Australia. The civil war was raging in the Solomon Islands at the time. The ship was further harmed by tides. With several of the windows gone, the ship has been experiencing surface rusting. The ship gained popularity as a tourist destination among island residents and other cruise ships, such as MV Princess II, that pass by World Discoverer. In the year 2000, a salvage attempt was made, however, it was "abandoned after gunfire with the local tribe."
Following the wreck, Society Expedition remodeled an ice-class ship and gave it the name World Discoverer. The subsequent ship now sails under the name Silver Explorer after more name modifications.
