Neuhaus
Neuhaus is one of Belgium's top chocolate companies, with a fascinating history. Jean Neuhaus, who owned a pharmacy in Brussels, began covering his medicines with a layer of chocolate to make them more appealing.
In 1912, his grandson Jean Neuhaus Jr. began replacing the medicine within the chocolate with delectable fillings, creating the first 'praline,' or filled chocolate. Praline is a popular type of chocolate with a firmer shell and a wonderful softer interior.
Neuhaus was crowned the greatest Belgian chocolate truffle in the world in 2017. Jean Neuhaus is also commonly credited with inventing the bonbon.
The original Jean Neuhaus store, located on the Galeries Royale Saint-Hubert in central Brussels, is still open for business. Neuhaus offers a wide range of forms and fillings, including gianduja, ganache, cream, and many others. Their luxurious gift packing is simply exceptional. Since 1999, they have had branches in New York City and Washington, DC.
