Owru Jari
In Suriname, the last week of the year is also a happy celebration week, when people gather to celebrate Owru Jari or New Year's Eve. This is definitely listed as one of the most famous festivals in Suriname.
Between Christmas and New Year's Day, there are several parties and street parties. Suriname's capital is blocked to traffic on Owru Jari at 10 a.m., followed by a massive firework display in the city. The capital city of the South American country closes at 10 a.m. during this festival to allow people to watch a large fireworks competition. Residents of the city also come out at night to dance and participate in various activities and large street celebrations.
Thousands of people flood the streets. Suriname's beats make young and old dance and whirl. It has a carnival atmosphere. The party continues in the evening with a large street party at 't Vat. Even Surinamese residents who live in other nations return home to celebrate Owru Jari.
