Pexels is a stock photography and video footage provider. It was established in 2014 in Germany and has a library of over 3.2 million free stock photos and videos. Pexels was established in Fuldabrück, Hesse, by twin brothers Ingo and Bruno Joseph. The siblings launched the platform in 2014 with approximately 800 photos. Daniel Frese has been a member of the squad since 2015. Pexels was purchased by Canva, a graphic creation platform, in 2018.
Pexels offers media for online download, with a library of over 3.2 million photos and videos that grows by approximately 200,000 files each month. Users upload material, which is manually reviewed. While using and downloading the media is free, the website earns money by displaying ads for paid content databases. Users can also donate, and while attribution to the content creator is not needed, it is appreciated. Pexels' database is now accessible in the Canva application as a result of the merger. Pexels is dedicated to providing a diverse database, for example, by including LGBTQ+ stock content and collaborating with Nappy, a platform focusing on POC content.
Similar to Pixabay, Pexels first distributed images with the CC0 Creative Commons license. Pexels currently doesn't provide media under CC0 but instead has their own set of rules for the use of their images. It's important to note that their license forbids reselling the content on other stock platforms or selling unaltered copies of a picture or video.
