pixabay.com is a website that offers royalty-free stock photos and royalty-free stock media. Photos, illustrations, vector graphics, film clips, music, and sound effects are shared solely under the Pixabay-specific license, which in general permits the free use of the content with some limitations. Although they cover a "wide range of subjects," the service's pictures have been characterized as having "mediocre for the most part" and "variable" overall quality.
Hans Braxmeier and Simon Steinberger established the site in November 2010 in Ulm, Germany. Prior to January 9, 2019, Pixabay images were distributed under the CC0 declaration, which places material in the public domain. On that day, it imposed a custom, more restrictive license on all of its content and changed its license to the "Pixabay License," which forbids the selling of unaltered copies of the licensed works as stock images or wallpapers. Because the terms of CC0 expressly state that once finished, the surrender into the public domain is "irrevocable," images that had previously been published under CC0 prior to the change in license remain accessible through various mirrors distributing under the original CC0 declaration.
Pixabay and Pexels were both purchased by the Australian design and publication platform Canva in May 2019.
