Pongara

Located on Gabon's west coast, just south of the country's capital, Libreville. The beaches in the Cape Pongara region are inside the boundaries of the same-named natural reserve. Their westernmost region is a multi-kilometer coastline stretch of white sand and emerald green rainforest.

Because elephants, buffaloes, monkeys, and other wild creatures frequently go out to play in the turquoise waters of the ocean, visiting the beach is only feasible as part of an excursion tour. Sand was intensively mined here in the past for sale to the Arab Emirates, which had a negative influence on the ecosystem. Special environmental agencies are now in charge of enforcing the ban, and offenders will face severe fines.

The reserve's northern beaches are located at the mouth of the Como River, which is home to a variety of unusual wildlife, including huge leatherback turtles. From November to February, the only method to reach their nesting sites is via boat, and the boat must be carried over the banks on your own shoulders.

The profusion of large logs washed up on Pongara beaches is a unique characteristic. This is due to the harmful wave action, which erodes the beach and brings it closer to the bush.

These areas have a typical tropical monsoon climate with a protracted rainy season. As a result, the ideal months to visit Libreville's environs are from June to August, when the quantity of precipitation is limited, the air heats up to 30 degrees, and the water in the ocean warms up to 25 degrees.
