Rain Man (1988)
Rain Man is a 1988 road movie about an arrogant and conceited wheeler-dealer who is shocked to discover that his wealthy father's inheritance has been bequeathed to his unknown autistic genius brother after his father's death. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman team up for this endearing drama, in which they play Charlie and Raymond Babbitt, who go on a cross-country road trip.
Rain Man premiered to acclaim at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival, receiving the festival's top honor, the Golden Bear. The film also won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, making it the first and only film to win both the Golden Bear and the Academy Award for Best Picture. Critic Gene Siskel praised Cruise's performance, saying, “The strength of the film is really that of Cruise’s performance […] the combination of two superior performances makes the movie worth watching”.
